All eligible veterans receive a burial flag and may receive military honors. The VA provides headstones, markers, and medallions at no cost, even for private cemetery burials. Service-connected death benefits may apply when burial is in a national cemetery, ensuring access to full benefits.
Families of service-connected deaths face no filing deadlines, ensuring access to full benefits. State veterans cemeteries and Arlington National Cemetery offer additional options, each with unique eligibility requirements. These facilities provide a final resting place that honors the veteran's service to our nation.
Military funeral honors include a minimum of two uniformed service members who fold and present the burial flag to the next of kin and play Taps. Full military honors may include a firing party, a bugler, and a casket team. These honors are available upon request through the funeral home.
Additional support resources include the Veterans Crisis Line (988, then Press 1), the VA Survivors' Benefits hotline, and local veterans service organizations such as the VFW, American Legion, and DAV. These organizations can help navigate the benefits process and connect survivors with ongoing support services.
