Rumae Nell Fontenot Andrus, a beloved member of the Ville Platte community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on Sunday September 19, 1948, in Ville Platte, Louisiana, Rumae was known for her loving and caring nature, her remarkable talents, and her unwavering dedication to her family and career. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Ville Platte. Burial will follow in the Te-Mamou Cemetery.
Rumae graduated from beauty school and began her professional journey as a beautician, showcasing her skills with grace and artistry. Her passion for education led her to earn a master's degree in education from Southern University reflecting her commitment to lifelong learning. Rumae taught for over 30 years in Evangeline Parish and also in the Houston Independent School District, where she inspired countless students with her creativity and wisdom.
In her personal life, Rumae cherished time spent with her family. She was especially fond of playing with her grandchildren to whom she was loving known as “Mawzy”. Her hobbies, which displayed her creativity included baking, sewing, quilting, and making floral arrangements. Indulging in shopping and garage sales was a great passion of hers.
Rumae will be remembered for her contributions as an educator but also for the immense love she had for her family and friends. She will be dearly missed by her loving husband of 59 years, Jean Andrus; her son, Jean Batiste Andrus; her daughter, Lisa Marie Andrus; 12 grandchildren: Kayla, Jonathon, Zane, Travis, Trenten, Tristan, Courtney, Victoria, Emily, Jade, Alana, and Jenna; as well as 6 great-grandchildren: Layla, TJ, Aiden, Emilynn, Emery, and Elizabeth. Their lives are forever enriched by the love and support she provided.
Rumae is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Lena Soileau Fontenot; her son, Ricky James Andrus; her daughter, Jeanie Lynn Legere; and her brother, Joseph D. Fontenot.
Her departure leaves a void in the hearts of many, but her legacy will continue through the love she shared and the lives she touched.
Visitation will be held at Ardoin's Funeral Home in Ville Platte on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM and again on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 8:00 AM until the funeral service at 11:00 AM. A rosary led by Deacon Tim Donovon will be recited Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
