Joseph "AJ" Fontenot, a beloved member of the Ville Platte community, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on Saturday, January 28, 1939, in Ville Platte, Louisiana, he lived a life characterized by hard work, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Our Lady Queen of All Saints Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Gates of Heaven Cemetery with Fr. Stephen Pellessier officiating services.
AJ proudly served in the United States Army, demonstrating his commitment to his country. AJ was a hard worker and had a successful career as an offshore derrick. His abilities as a mechanic and of being a ”Jack of all trades” contributed to his success in the oil industry.
Like many boys growing up in Cajun Country, AJ spoke French fluently and was passionate about the outdoors. He enjoyed a variety of activities, including hunting, fishing, gardening, camping, and cooking. These hobbies brought him immense joy but more importantly allowed him to bond with family and friends.
AJ was a devoted family man who deeply cherished the time he spent offering love and support to his two daughters, Debbie Gorman (Richard) and Donna Pierce. He also took great pride in his role as a grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, leaving behind a legacy of six grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Mary Smith; brothers, Noral Fontenot (Beatrice), Donald Fontenot (Beverly), and Kenneth Fontenot (Sandra); and his loving companion, Mackie Fuselier.
AJ was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Joseph and Ernestine Ortego Fontenot and wife, Georgianna Fontenot.
