James Gurvis O'Connor Sr.

James Gurvis O’Connor, Sr., a lifelong resident of Ville Platte passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2026 in his hometown at the age of 79. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 PM on Monday, January 12 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Shaw Cemetery with Fr. Alex Lancon officiating services.

Gurvis exemplified the spirit of patriotism through his dedicated service in the United States Army, where he achieved the rank of Spec 4 Sergeant. He courageously served during the Vietnam War and put his very life on the line safeguarding the freedoms we cherish today.

Following his military career, Gurvis joined the Ville Platte Police Department, further committing himself to public service. Gurvis later established Gurvis Upholstery Shop, a thriving business that not only supported his family but also allowed him the flexibility to work from home while caring for those he cherished the most.

A proud American and a member of the Republican Party, Gurvis relied on Fox News for reliable information. His deep-rooted love for his community was evident in his willingness to assist anyone in need, and he took great pride in calling it home.

In his leisure time, Gurvis enjoyed watching classic Western films and listening to Cajun music.

Gurvis will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Shirlene LaFleur O'Connor; his son, James "Jim" Gurvis O'Connor, Jr.; and his sister, Helen O’Connor Milligan.

He now joins in heaven his parents, William O'Connor and Elam Vidrine O'Connor and his sister, Mary O'Connor Jenkins.

Visitation will take place at Ardoin’s Funeral Home on Sunday, January 11, 2026 at 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again on Monday, January 12, 2026 beginning at 12:00 PM until time of service. A rosary, led by Deacon Tim Donovan, will be recited at 5:00 PM on Sunday.
